Developing a Culturally Responsive Behavioral Intervention Team Workshop

Understand how to develop a culturally responsive approach in every stage of the BIT process

Developing a Culturally Responsive Behavior Intervention Team Workshop is designed to provide Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs) with essential training in bias recognition, cultural competence, and equitable risk assessment and intervention practices. BITs play a critical role in identifying and addressing concerning behaviors in students, and this workshop ensures that assessments and interventions are culturally informed and free from bias.

Participants will explore the impact of implicit bias on decision-making, learn about diverse cultural identities, backgrounds, and perspectives, and develop skills to approach interventions with sensitivity and fairness. Faculty will introduce strategies for mitigating bias, promoting equity, and developing culturally responsive approaches at every stage of the BIT process. Through interactive activities and dialogue, participants will develop the skills necessary to create a more inclusive and effective BIT team.

  • Define implicit bias and recognize its influence on decision-making and student interactions in educational settings
  • Develop culturally responsive strategies for identifying and addressing student behaviors that account for students’ diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Identify potential bias in the assessment and response processes used by Behavioral Intervention Teams, and implement methods to ensure fair and equitable interventions
  • Explain BITs’ legal and ethical responsibilities in addressing student behavior without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or other protected characteristics
