Violence Risk Assessment of the Written Word (VRAWW)

Operationalize a process for evaluating concerns in written narratives.

Access to online communication and rising emotional health challenges have led to a significant uptick in written communications that could be perceived as aggressive and threatening. BIT/ TAT/CARE teams are often tasked with identifying whether an individual’s emails, social media, and discussion board posts show a risk or threat of violence. This one-day certification course provides teams with a straightforward process for triaging concerns found in written narratives.

NABITA’s Violence Risk Assessment of the Written Word (VRAWW) is a comprehensive tool designed to evaluate the risk of violence evident in an individual’s narrative content, including social media posts, class writings, journals, blog posts, video narratives, and more. This training certifies participants in using VRAWW and is NABITA’s recommended training on the tool. VRAWW offers an objective approach by considering an individual’s escalating and mitigating factors as well as research on past violent attacks.

VRAWW is not just a theoretical concept, but a practical tool that plays a vital role in team meetings. Its evaluation can guide teams in determining whether a more specialized threat assessment, such as the Structured Interview for Violence Risk Assessment (SIVRA-35), is necessary. By participating in this training, individuals will acquire the expertise to manage these situations confidently and make informed decisions based on the assessment.

In this course, you will learn:

  • Apply the VRAWW to written content to conduct a more standardized, research-based assessment of the written word.
  • Identify the key escalating and mitigating factors used in a violence risk assessment of emails, social media posts and written narratives.
  • Develop appropriate interventions based on the scoring of VRAWW and the accompanying Risk Rubric rating.
